Yes - it would be lovely if it were true. I love Trollope and read through all I could find of his books back in the seventies. I loved the Palliser series and the Barchester series, but I think the best to read right now is The Way We Live Now (could be about the tech AprilFoolhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17420284866307722243noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6589226281542951200.post-90032331958788404072010-12-17T15:33:57.256-05:002010-12-17T15:33:57.256-05:00Although I've enjoyed Austen, I haven't ye...Although I've enjoyed Austen, I haven't yet read Mansfield Park. You know, I just assumed it was a reprint of a speech from the 19th century, as I know that he did lecture about Austen, but I cannot deny that there was no Jane Austen Society in existence at the time (let alone a JASNA). How sad! I was so excited by the prospect that I obviously did not think it through (might I plead pregnancy brain?). I'll take the line out of the post.<br /Alexa Adamshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10086472405632748174noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6589226281542951200.post-33512541058409604572010-12-09T00:35:24.028-05:002010-12-09T00:35:24.028-05:00I see the Persuasions article from 1987; but Antho...I see the Persuasions article from 1987; but Anthony Trollope died in 1882, so he clearly did not give a speech in 1987. Neither could he have been a member of the Jane Austen Society, which did not start until the 1940s. Must be someone else with the same name - or a masquerade? Joanna Trollope is a member of the same family, though not a direct descendant.AprilFoolhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17420284866307722243noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6589226281542951200.post-16977850345070055062010-12-09T00:31:52.368-05:002010-12-09T00:31:52.368-05:00This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.AprilFoolhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17420284866307722243noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6589226281542951200.post-2955545730010605042010-12-07T15:45:45.415-05:002010-12-07T15:45:45.415-05:00So glad you enjoyed, LifetimeReader! I have not read about Trollope extensively enough to answer your question in general, but I do know that Austen was one of his very favorite writers and, as such, I think it is safe to assume he recognized her as an influence. A far as The Bertrams goes, I'm pretty sure the references are deliberate. Your post makes me assume Trollope was very deliberate in his allusions. I assume you'd agree? Do you know if he ever wrote anything about the connections?
