However, I think her portrayal is unrealistic. She is depressed, lonely, constantly repressing any real happiness, joy, freedom, or confidence in favor of humble obedience, out of fear and low self-confidence. Yet she is often a little fake (pretending to be a close friend of Mary Crawford who she dislikes) rather than causing a stir by hihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08865468313689154165noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6589226281542951200.post-55722624632625518332013-12-06T00:16:09.767-05:002013-12-06T00:16:09.767-05:00“Nothing is more deceitful," said Darcy, &quo...“Nothing is more deceitful," said Darcy, "than the appearance of humility. It's interesting that all the comments on this post, so far, are from Fanny lovers. Perhaps the haters are ashamed of themselves? That seems too optimistic to be true.Alexa Adamshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10086472405632748174noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6589226281542951200.post-59415351207022622662010-10-21T15:44:16.554-04:002010-10-21T15:44:16.554-04:00I love Fanny. I think, as Ashton-Dennis (sadly RIP, of the Male Voices in Praise of Jane Austen site, now happily archived) said, people feel judged by Jane Austen through Fanny. But I don't - I feel challenged to become better.ibmillerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16914380316134426353noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6589226281542951200.post-89917233791269435662010-10-21T15:42:51.764-04:002010-10-21T15:42:51.764-04:00I've always liked the character of Fanny and I...I've always liked the character of Fanny and I think it part of Austen's genius that she created such a heroine; It's something one didn't expect.Katherinehttp://www.elizabethgaskell.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6589226281542951200.post-5748675450141053692010-10-21T12:53:19.344-04:002010-10-21T12:53:19.344-04:00Hi Farida, and welcome! Mansfield Park is one of my favorite Austen novels too (and yes, it is a "partial and prejudice" exercise to attempt to rank them, as all are magnificent). I fail to understand why such hatred exists towards Fanny. I think she is perfectly lovely, and I wish I was more like her. She always follows her principles and does her best to be of use and bring comfort to those around her. I absolutely admire her for her strength and her many wonderful qualities. In fact, after rereading "Mansfield Park" I realized that it just might be my favourite Austen Phoebe's Sistershttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03548739602100284299noreply@blogger.com
