Fresh Air Review of Jane's Fame by Claire Harman

I just had to share what one of my very favorite book reviewers, Maureen Corrigan of NPR's Fresh Air and Georgetown University, has to say about about Claire Harman's new book, Jane's Fame: How Jane Austen Conquered the World. I still haven't decided whether or not I will actually read this book, but the review is magnificent!

  1. Go on, Alexa read it.
From the point of view of HOW somebody becomes famous, it is an interesting analysis.

Does brilliance rise to the top no matter what?

I'm not sure about that, going by the celebrity dross we get in this country. People become famous who have no apparent talent for anything. What concerns me is how much brilliance has never come to light. What have we missed?

  2. Hi Southerner. Very good question. What have we missed? We've certainly recorded a great deal of mediocrity. I'm sure I will read the book, at some point. At the moment life is a bit crazy, so I'll just have to continue enjoying the debate over it for a while longer before I enter the fray myself. Thanks for stopping by!
